  about me

Wow! You just stumbled upon my webpage. Not that I am extremely proud of the the layout of this page, but at least I can be proud of its contents.

I was born in 1969, and though I don't like to brag (really, I hate it), I work as a software engineer. At least for the time being. That explains why on earth I have a webpage on the Internet. Because, I think that eventually I'll get lots of head hunters and bots looking up my resume, which you'll find somewhere among the profusion of links. Anyway, on the day I get that important phone call to work for a Giga-Mega company, I have probably moved on to another more compelling profession. Well, at that time I guess I need to update my resume.

In the meantime, I can still write a little about myself. You know, those personal experiences that remain immutable through life, but I need not refer on my resume.

I was born in Germany, where I spend my childhood years. I have great memories from that time, and some bad memories, like any other kid. From that time, I've kept some very good friends and I still go back from time to time to visit old memories. I went to elementary school in Neuss, Germany, until the age of 12. These early years of my life left a long lasting mark on me, thus many of my friends are not surprised to see a german influence on me.

I wasn't going to become a person to stay put in the same place for the rest of my life, so to start, I went to Portugal by the time I was 12. Not that it was my decision to move there, mind you, but I still lived with my parents and they decided to move back to their home country, which is Portugal.

I like Portugal. Actually, I love Portugal. It's a wonderful country, and like anything in life, there are good things and bad things. Which makes me love and accept Portugal and its people anyway. Even the things that irritate me, sometimes.

My parents were from small villages near Leiria, Portugal. This is a very neat and small town in the centre of the country, very close to the atlantic ocean. From early on I developed a love for the seas, which surpasses my love for mountains or any other earthly feature. Though I still love mountains, plains, deserts and such, but there is nothing quite like the sea.

In this little town, I continued my elementary education moving between 3 different schools. Here I developed a keen interest in sciences, though some of my teachers wanted me to study history (which I love by the way). Early on I was very interested in physics. I even thought that I would pursue an academic research career, but I was not confident enough to believe in myself, so I went for something that I thought more practical, like software engineering. But, definitely I always regretted my decision. Now, the best I can do is make the best out of it, until I get tired and try something else. This time I won't go for the practicality, but for the fun of it. For the pure pleasure of satisfying my needs and dreams. Isn't it what we all should be doing?

So, I graduated from the University of Coimbra in 1992 in software engineering or whatever they called it then. In any case, it had to do with computers and how to work with them. Coimbra is a very nice town, devoted almost entirely to an academic lifestyle, due to its centuries old university. I had some fun there, though I wish I had spend much more time on having fun, than on studying. I lived there for 5 years, but I never felt quite like being home. So, at the end of my study period, I moved on (once again) to Cascais, a small fishermen village near Lisbon. The reason for my move was actually me finding a wonderful job there. I remember that on my job interview I fell in love with the place immediately and knew that this was where I wanted to live. At least for the time being.

The five years I spent in Cascais where probably of the best years in my life. It made me grow as a person much more than anything else. They also gave me the best fun time I had at work. Since then, I never had that much fun anymore. Maybe, this means I need a new change in my life. Who knows? Well, actually, I know.

Back in 1995, I realized that I didn't have that much fun anymore and that I wanted to move again. This time I thought of something big, of making one of my old dreams come true. I wanted to move to Canada. It always fascinated me, when I was growing up and now I felt I could do it. But, I didn't have the confidence enough to actually step forward and not look back. It took me 2 years to gain enough confidence to actually say, "I'm going". And here I am, since 1998 in Canada. I have gone through some bad times, but overall I have had very good times. And lately, I believe I had the best time of my life. Wow, what confidence I have gained! What journey I have travelled for so long. But still, it is exciting to see what wonderful journey still lies ahead of me. A journey where some of my dreams will come true, some won't, but overall, I can say that I will become a better man, as each day unfolds.

hobbies

I sometimes think I have too many hobbies, but maybe one can never have enough.

I enjoy skiing, orienteering, canoeing (what could be more canadian), mountain biking, ultimate frisbee and running.

But not only sports are my hobbies, so I tend to love reading (a lot), listening to very diverse music, writing, photography, languages, science in general, specially paleontology and mapping.
